With an England World Cup match being televised only twelve club members took to the green in glorious sunshine to compete for the National Sports Centre Cup.
The drawn pairs, two-wood competition was played as a round-robin league with each pair playing all the others over eight ends. After four rounds were completed two teams had bubbled up to the lead - Colin Meadows and Sheila Payne with a record of won three and drawn one, and Derek Davies and Quentin Smith unbeaten on four wins. As these two pairs met in the final round this match proved to be a de-facto final.
Derek and Quentin started strongly with a four and added three more unanswered shots in the next two ends. By this time the short game format was already working against Colin and Sheila, who were seven down with only five ends to play. They rallied well, taking six shots to their opponent's two, but Derek and Quentin finished ahead 9-6 to take the trophy with an unbeaten record.
The victory gives Derek his first win in a club one-day competition and is Quentin's third win in the competition.
