The first five finals were decided on a dry but chilly day. In the Mike Caird Cup, Mike himself took on defending champion Rod Payne. Mike started well with a 4 on the first end and was 9-0 up before Rod scored a single on the fifth end. Mike piled on the pressure and despite a 3 on the seventh end Rod found himself needing two fours on the last two ends to tie the set and went down 15-4 with an end to spare. The second set was much closer and was tied at 5-5 after six ends. Mike then scored a 2 and a 3 to lead 10-5 with two ends to play and despite scoring a few shots Rod could only bring the score back to 10-8, giving Mike the win by 2 sets to 0.
In the Tarmac Cup (handicap) Keith Chaney and Mike Hubbard, both playing off scratch, played out an excellent game with very tight heads. The score was 8-8 after 11 ends and 15 across after 19 ends, but Keith held his nerve to pick up four singles and a 2 while Mike only scored a single, giving Keith the 21-16 win.
In the afternoon session the Cyril Davies (veterans') Cup saw an epic battle between Franks Hill and Beasland. After 17 ends the score was 12-12, but Frank Hill edged ahead to lead 16-12 and 18-14. However from 16-19 down Frank Bealand produced two magnificent ends, scoring a 2 and a 3 to win 21-19 on the 31st end.
In the Nuway Cup (open) Mike Hubbard and Sheila Simcoe played out a tough match. On the scorecard Mike was always in control, but the final 21-11 score is probably a little unkind to Sheila.
The Pairs Competition saw holder Quentin Smith and partner Mike Caird playing Iain Ellis and Rod Payne. Iain and Rod got away to a 5-1 lead, but Mike and Quentin pulled this back and led for the middle part of the match, being 14-9 up after 14 ends. Iain and Rod picked up a two and were holding three in the next end. With no prospect of drawing, Quentin fired and stuck the head beautifully, only to get a cruel result and go five down. Iain produced some excellent lead bowls over the next few ends and Mike and Quentin found themselves 14-21 down with ends running out. Good defensive play saw Iain and Rod home with the final score 24-15.
The results mean Kath Matthews is now the only Club Champion in a position to retain their title, in the ladies singles, Frank Richards Cup.
