Twenty members took to a chilly green to contest the first of the club one-day competitions, the "yardstick" competition for the Val Smith Memorial Trophy.
Arranged in groups of four, and moving between rinks to ensure fairness, each player delivered forty bowls to jacks that in most cases were not centred on the rink, but just played where they lay. Each bowl finishing within one yard of the jack, as measured using the official sticks, scored one point. Naturally there were a few complaints as bowls were edged out of scoring range, or the jacks trailed, but a good time was had by all.
After the completion of five rounds the scores were assessed. Kath Matthews was the highest scoring lady and Quentin Smith the highest gentleman, both having a couple of shots advantage over their nearest rivals.
