Sixteen members competed for the National Sports Centre Cup 2-wood drawn pairs competition. After a 'spider' for a bottle remaining from the Captain's and President's Day (won by Chris Squires) the teams were drawn and divided into two leagues of four pairs.
Each team played the others in its half of the draw over just eight ends - a tight format which penalised any loose play. In the 'numbers' league the pairing of Roy Sewell and Ruth Lowe were unbeaten and two points clear of their nearest rivals. In the 'letters' league though two teams were unbeaten after two games and had to play each other in the last game. This game was drawn, giving both teams eight points, so shot difference was compared. The fancied 'domestic' pairing of Rod Payne and Sheila Simcoe had a shot difference of +9, but winners were Ted Matthews and Paul Mitchell with +13.
The final was also played over eight ends. The first four ends were shared, each team taking a single and a three. Paul and Ted then won three singles, leaving Roy and Ruth needing a three to force an extra end. Though they won the final end the single shot was not enough, so Ted and Paul were the victors.
Out photos show the spider, the finalists and the winners receiving their trophy from Captain Rod Payne. (Previous winners)
